How can virtual water trade reshape water stress pattern? A global evaluation based on the metacoupling perspective

چکیده

With water scarcity increasingly becoming a growing global risk, it is prevalent to explore supply-demand interaction within and beyond national borders driven by virtual trade its effects on sustainability. However, there little study system integration of differential environmental impacts various types trade. Based metacoupling framework highlighting human-nature interactions across space- place (intracoupling), between adjacent places (pericoupling), distant (telecoupling), this quantified the linkages intensities three kinds coupling processes during for first time. Correspondingly, stress changes under set scenarios were evaluated based indicator UN SDG 6.4.2 distinguish influence taking different spatial scales. Results show that 2005–2015, local resources supported 80% consumption. Distant import was about 5 times in volume as large import, alleviating 99.8% average stress. Virtual reduced 86% developed countries increased 71% developing 2005. Owing trade, many with poor endowment declined while relatively good went up from 2005 2015. Our findings can help systematically understand change provide scientific guidance sustainable management regional regulations.

Modeling crop cultivation pattern based on virtual water trade: evidence from Marvdasht in southern Iran

ABSTRACT- This study aims to model optimal cultivation pattern based on the maximization of importing virtual water and social net income of major crops in Marvdasht, Iran. For this purpose, a linear programming model was developed considering constraints of virtual water and land limitations followed by other models to include employment restrictions. Based on the findings, wheat and tomato we...

Evolution of the global virtual water trade network.

Global freshwater resources are under increasing pressure from economic development, population growth, and climate change. The international trade of water-intensive products (e.g., agricultural commodities) or virtual water trade has been suggested as a way to save water globally. We focus on the virtual water trade network associated with international food trade built with annual trade data...

Survey of Virtual Water Trade and its Impact on Water Productivity in the Shoshtar MianAb irrigation and Drainage Network

Water is the first and foremost limiting factor for agricultural production, and undoubtedly, water crisis is considered as one of the international challenges for governments and human societies. Given that virtual water was first used as a way to tackle water scarcity in countries with limited water resources, so that countries with low water should import food from abundant countries...

While work continues on Gibe III, Ethiopia has already approved plans for several new schemes, including a giant 2,100 MW project on the Blue Nile and a number of other dams have already been built or are close to...
